OUSIA - Columbarium
A columbarium project for Riga, Latvia. Cast concrete chambers arranged around an open court - a place to remember without ornament.
OUSIA was developed for an international competition in Riga. The programme is a columbarium for a community cemetery in the north of the city. Our scheme reads as a single ring of dark, ribbed concrete chambers around an unprogrammed gravel court - a place that resists being decorated. Niches are slotted along the inner face, lit from above through narrow skylights that mark each compartment. The work was shortlisted and published in two international journals.
